Know Thyself
Introduction:
One of the keys to being a leader is knowing one's own strengths and needs. Being able to accurately assess one's own skills and talents can give direction for making better judgments in school, work and life. This assignment uses a variety of tools meant to measure one's personality. As you take these tests and reflect on their results, think about whether they closely relate to what you already know of yourself (or not) and why (or why not) that is?

ESFJ, INTP - what's with the alphabet soup in personality testing?

Assignment:
1. Take at least three of the personality surveys listed under course resources (click on the button to the side for resources, look for the folder called Personality Surveys).
  • Jung Typology Test- Everyone should take this survey. Once you get your personality "type" there will be two links with further information. Be sure to follow both links and copy and paste all the info you find into Word so you can refer to it later. Explanation of dichotomies
  • 41 Questions - also based on the Myers-Briggs personality test - see if your results match with the first test you took.
  • Kiersey Temperament Sorter- This survey will ask for you to register with your name and email address. The purpose of creating account is so you can log in later to access your results. If you have time to complete this survey in class and then to copy and paste your results, you shouldn't need to see your results online again. You could provide a false email address and/or name if you do not want to put your personal info online and still be able to to take the test. The first questions regarding amount of school and occupation do not apply to the results either so fill in what you want to for this information.
  • The Big Five Personality Test- This test is to measure your range on a continuum of 5 different characteristics. You get good results but not much interpretation of what the results mean. The test has 45 questions which you rank on a 5 point scale from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree. Those of you having trouble with committing to yes or no answers might prefer this test. There are a number of demographic questions at the end of the test which you probably should create answers for in order for your results to be compared with others from your geographical area. I'm not sure if you can leave these blank.
  • Personality Quiz based on questions from the International Personality Item Pool. - Same characteristics as Big Five Personality Test. Compare your results if you take both of these.
  • A Different Thinker Quiz - What kind of thinker are you? A 5 question quickie!
  • Stress Level Quiz - This isn't really a personality test but it is an interesting bit of information. Some of you might find the quiz recommends you are way too busy! Take this one and see!
  • Leadership Skills and Assessment- - This is a paper/pencil assessment. I find it interesting because it deals directly with leadership qualities. Check this one out if only to read the types of skills this quiz chooses to emphasize as indicative of good leadership.

3. Create an essay that includes the following information:

  • Give a brief summary of your "personality type" including the interpretations of all the tests taken.
  • How did the tests and interpretations match your personality?
  • How did the tests and interpretations differ from your personality?
  • What is something new you learned about your personality type?
  • What is an area you might want to improve upon and why?
  • What might you do to improve this area?
  • What is the validity or helpfulness of these tests in your opinion?
  • Now that we have had the chance to explore our own personality characteristics, how can we use the same tools to better understand others?

What is the role of emotional intelligence and empathy in leadership?

1. Read the article Honesty, Empathy Cited in Effective Leadership (see attached above).

2. Find two other resources to support your opinion about the role of emotional intelligence and/or empathy in leadership.

3. Prepare an outline, flowchart, concept map or other graphic representation of your opinion regarding the role of understanding others as a part of leadership. Your graphic should include clear references to your main points and supporting details from sources.

4. You will have between one and two minutes to make your case to the class regarding your opinion. Plan to use your graphic as a part of your presentation.

Extra Credit
