Task #1 - What does an inventor do?
Use the resources below to find out what an inventor actually does. Write a paragraph or make a web showing the job of an inventor.

Be sure to include:
  1. the steps to making an invention,
  2. qualities an inventor needs to have, and
  3. what kinds of things an inventor does.

Task #2 - Brainstorming Problems and Solutions

A. Make a list of at least 20 things that bother or bug you. Put a star or asterisk (*) by the top 5 problems on your list. Your list can be a mix of every-day irritations and larger, world concerns. You can use the list of world issues to help you focus on bigger ideas. If you want more detail on world issues, check out the facing the future site.

B. Homework - Survey others about what bothers and bugs them. Use this worksheet - copy and paste to Word, Google Docs or download and save to your Google Drive. Google Docs Version.

Task #3 - Documenting Your Idea
A. Doodles, Drafts and Designs*- This site and activity are designed to show you how inventors, architects, engineers and advertisers use drawings differently.


  • Read the introduction
  • Choose ONE drawing to read about from each of the FOUR sections (Working it out, Convincing, Controlling, & Recording).
  • Take notes about what you find out. Include the similarities, differences and interesting aspects of the different types of drawings in your notes (example: one bullet point should be a detail you observe about the drawing; one bullet point should show how it is similar to other drawings in the same category; one bullet point should show how it is different from drawings in the other categories).
  • Turn in your notes via Edmodo.

B. Create your own drawings of your invention.
  • Start with a "working it out" type concept sketch. Be sure to label the parts. Include what materials your invention will be made from. Give as many specifics as you can.
  • For your second draft, make your drawing as technical as possible. Include realistic representations of the size and shape. Include accurate measurements.
  • If your invention is intangible (computer software, a process for doing something better), then create a flow chart that shows how the software or process works.
  • If you drew your inventions on paper, scan in or take a digital photo of your designs.

C. Invention Description: Create a persuasive description of your invention.

Answer the following questions in a paragraph:
  • What is your invention called? (Check out this video)
  • What does your invention do? (purpose)
  • How does your invention work? (function)
  • Who is your invention for? (Who will buy it? Who will use it? Who does it help?)
  • What additional elements can be added? (accessories)
  • What other important details need to be shared?

Task #4 - Documenting Your Idea
A. Patent Certification Test - Click on the attached link to learn more about patents by doing a little research.

B. Patent Search - Use the following websites to learn more about how to do a search for a patent. Do your own KEYWORD search for your invention on the US Patent & Trademark Office website. You must look through at least 3 patent CLAIMS so that you are ready for your next task!
Task #5 – Apply for Your Patent
Applying for your patent requires a number of components:

A. The Patent Application is a document which verifies that your invention does not already have a patent (or hasn't been patented by someone else) and is your own original work. You need to include the invention description and technical drawing you made in Task #3. For now, just fill out the document and save it. We will print and add signatures closer to when we do our presentations.

B. You need to write a CLAIM about your invention. You should have read several claims when you were performing your patent search in Task #4. There are also some student claim examples attached above. Use the Student Claim Template to help you create your claim. Use a thesaurus to help you come up with the specific and accurate technical vocabulary you will need to explain your invention.

A Venture Capitalist (Think Shark Tank) has heard of the innovative inventions happening at Indian Hill. Will your invention be the one to get funding? Create a persuasive presentation to help convince the funding group to choose your invention idea.

Strategies for making a successful pitch

Your presentation should include (Use more slides if you need them):

      • Slide 1 - Name of invention, Logo, Slogan
        • Fonts
        • Animated Fonts
        • Logo Ideas
        • Logo Maker This is a website that gives you the option to include your slogan, invention name, and a graphic. It gives you a lot of choices and when you are done it makes you a folder in your MyStuff of logos based on what you chose. It includes the same logo over and over again, but in different colors. -Sarah Kaplan
        • OPTIONAL: Commercial for your product.

      • Slide 2 - Persuasive description - Be sure people understand what your invention IS and what it DOES.

      • Slide 2 or 3 - Technical Drawing - Labeled picture of invention (put your picture on a new slide if it will not fit next to your description)

      • Slide 3 - 5 - Budget/Business Plan (Take as many slides as needed to get your point across! Be sure to answer these questions.)
        • What will your invention cost to make?
        • How many items will you make?
        • What will you spend for advertising?

        • What else could you do to promote your product?
        • What will you charge for your product?
        • The idea is to make money so you can earn a living, and pay back the Venture Capitalists with interest.
